CHAPTER 9

Specific Phobia

Sarah, 8 years old

Sarah is an 8-year-old girl with autism and a moderate intellectual disability who is nonverbal and attends a local school for children with developmental disabilities. She loves dancing and playing with water and sand. Since starting school three years ago, Sarah has taken a private bus to and from school with other children from her class. Around three months ago, Sarah was on the bus when they had a minor accident in which the bus collided with a car on the way home from school. No one was hurt, and the bus received only minor damage and was able to continue the trip home; however, since then, Sarah has become extremely distressed when taken to the bus to go to and from school, crying, kicking, screaming, and trying to run away if attempts are made to get her on the bus. Consequently, Sarah’s parents have had to arrange to drive her to and from school each day.
